On Writing

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I’m over at Reading Between the Wines, and I’m talking about my recent experience with a character who refused to behave (that naughty boy ;-) ).

Hi everyone, I’m over at Reading Between the Wines talking about demon protagonists and a few of the different kinds of demons in my world. Pop in if you get the chance. I’m giving away a copy of Mark of the Sylph!

Hi everyone. The past couple of months have been so crazy-busy I could barely even breathe. I just realized it’s been 2 1/2 months since I released my first self-published novella, so I’d like to give an update on sales.

In my first month of sales (I’m counting mid-May to mid-June), I sold about 120 books. The next month I doubled that figure. And so far for this month? On track to double last month’s figure. Now, overall my sales are relatively modest, so I didn’t put the pattern together until I decided to do another update for you folks.

The result? I’m pretty freaking excited. If the sales numbers are doubling every month, within a few months I’ll have a pretty nice income for one little story that took me less than a month to write and publish. And what will happen when I put up a second book for sale? A third? I can see how sales figures will grow exponentially, and that makes me want to dance around the room.

In other industry thoughts, there are times when you make a decision and you are truly conflicted over whether you’ve made the right one. You could go one of two ways and you seriously don’t know which way would be better.

This is how I felt back in March when I received an offer of publication from Entangled Publishing. I was querying my manuscript and several agents had the full. My request rate for queries was pretty decent: about 1 out of 10. I finally decided to go with Entangled because I loved their vision and truly believed they understood where the industry was headed. Also, frankly, I’m very impatient. I didn’t want to wait to find an agent, wait to (hopefully) sell, then wait another 1-2 years to be published. The thought of that killed me.

Now, several months later, I’m so glad I made the choice I did. So much has changed in the industry even in just these four months. Ebooks are taking over far more rapidly than I think anyone could have expected. Part of that is the ease of these reading devices. Earlier this year I told anyone who’d listen that I would never switch over to an ereader. Now? I’m addicted. I still like my paper books, but for traveling nothing beats an ereader, and I can see how I will likely phase my paper books out as time goes by (especially now that my fave bookstore, Borders, is out of business). And the best thing about my new publisher is that, for those who refuse to make the leap to ebooks, they will also release in print (via POD and possibly through sales to retailers like Walmart and Target).

To sum up, there are a lot of great things happening in the publishing industry right now, and they’re happening on the ebook front. Can’t wait to see what comes next!

Funny how much natural beauty can exist in a city filled with steel, stone and glass. I’m having a great time here in NYC. Hope you are all having a good week too. Smile

Have you ever visited a place that just spoke to you, that totally inspired you? I’ve found a few cities like that in my lifetime, and one of those is my very own hometown: New York City.

I’m visiting NYC this week, and I foresee a lot of inspired writing when I get back home. Smile

So what places have you visited that you absolutely couldn’t wait to return to?

Money

I started thinking about book prices the other day. There’s this book I’ve had my eye on for a while, by a debut author. But when I finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase it, I saw that the cheapest price was still very steep. At ten dollars for the digital copy, it was out of my price range for a new author whose writing style I know nothing about.

So today I’m turning things over to you. I’d like to know what’s the max price you are willing to shell out for a book by a new or new-to-you author, both in digital and print format. What’s the max price you’d pay for a self-published book?

The other day I was reading a post on Bob Mayer’s blog, Write it Forward, and something he said caught my attention. It’s regarding a topic I’ve been thinking a lot about—author promotion. Here’s what he said about the subject:

Too many people are pouring the time and energy into promotion that they should be putting into learning the craft of writing. The best promotion technique available is a good book. And more than one title. In fact, I think new authors should wait until they have at least three novels in a series, before they focus a good majority of their time on promoting.

I think instinctually that he must be right. What better way to grow an author brand than by releasing more books? But then we get to the subjective part of this equation: how much time should an author focus on promotion?

One of the benefits of working with my fabulous new publisher, Entangled Publishing, is that I get a publicist who works with me on building my brand. Cathy Yardley is one savvy lady (and an author herself). Her take on the subject is that an author can reasonably spend no more than half an hour a day on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) (At least that’s what I got from our conversation; I’m sure she’ll correct me if I’m wrong.)

So half an hour a day? That sounds doable, even for someone with a hectic writing schedule. The problem is (and I think it’s one that many authors have) that I feel like I should be doing much more. I don’t know which of my marketing efforts will pay off, so that makes me want to do more of them with the goal of getting something to stick. But that becomes an issue if it begins to cut in on writing time. Writing is the most important thing, after all.

For you readers, what sort of author marketing gets your attention? In which ways (besides word of mouth) do you find new authors? For those of you who have already published, what marketing efforts have you done, and is there anything you feel has really paid off?

Hi everyone. I’m eyeballs-deep in revisions for Mark of the Sylph, Book 2 of my DEMONS OF INFERNUM series (scheduled to be released by Entangled Publishing in October 2011). So I thought I’d share with you my muse for this story:

Taeg Muse

Taeg, the hero in Mark of the Sylph, is a sarcastic know-it-all who can find the humor in any situation. In many ways he reminds me of Dean Winchester from Supernatural.

May he bring you as much inspiration as he’s brought me (rawr). Smile
